About the designer of Ashok Lamp

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been fascinated by detail. This eye for the minutiae which enhances a visual experience has been honed in my case over many years. ASHOK LAMP, as it is eponymously named, showcases the fruits of my design and production of lamps.

The seed for this venture was sown on my first trip to Japan in 1994. It was there that I was awed and inspired by the singular and minimalist beauty of the Andon(lamp}. I decided there and then that this would be my new calling and began the process of discovery that would involve both craft and discipline.

Here is a little background to my approach. My choice of wood and paper is based on their texture, grain, and color, and on how they complement each other. The electrical fittings are carefully chosen to integrate with the overall design -whether it’s the slick bulb holder or the concealed electric cable. The outcome is a product that transcends mere functionality. The Ashok Lamp is more than just a light source; its form provides an aesthetic accent to a room. While the inspiration is Japanese, the final product is eclectic with a signature style that integrates European design sensibilities.

I design and produce my lamps upon commission for both commercial enterprises and private individuals. As with the Lamps, I also follow the same principles and approach in producing small pieces of furniture like Shoji {sliding screens), and other wood-based items. These are also available for purchase.

My interest in art began during my early childhood years spent in Jamshedpur, a city in eastern India. The initial spark was provided by my late father who opened my eyes to the wonderful world of craft. Thereafter, I was nurtured by the Tagore Society until I enrolled to study sculpture at the faculty of Fine Arts. This is affiliated with the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara, a city in western India. Here, under the guidance of master purveyors of the three-dimensional form, I was able to elevate my skill set and develop a higher aesthetic sensibility that has guided my design journey. The fortuitous invitation of The Gerrit Rietveld Academy in the early 90s not only introduced me to Amsterdam but provided me with more exposure to the modern language of three-dimensional form. I also gained an intimate understanding of design to reach a broader, more enlightened audience. Before Ashok Lamps, I worked for the Indian Railways and the World Health Organization creating educational posters for them. I have exhibited in Europe, India, and Japan; and have been felicitated with awards - the leading designer at the Puur Doorn Design Fair in The Netherlands, Lalit Kala Academy, and the All India Fine Arts and Craft Society award, to name but a few. I currently live and practice out of my studio gallery in Amsterdam.

I accept orders both in the atelier and online. Upon request, I will be glad to provide further infomation. Thank you for your time.
